Reddit, Quora, HN, Stack Exchange, Indie Hackers: where each one wins

· 7 min read

"Do forum marketing" is not a strategy, because these five places behave nothing like each other. Intent, half-life, and tolerance for vendors differ enough that a tactic that works on one will get you removed from another.

ForumBest forWatch out for
RedditVolume and specificity — a subreddit for almost every niche, with people describing problems in their own words.Per-community rules vary wildly. The strictest ban vendors outright.
QuoraLong tail search traffic. Answers rank and keep earning attention for years.Slow. Nothing happens the week you post it.
Hacker NewsReaching technical founders and engineers at the moment they're evaluating.Unforgiving of marketing language. One promotional sentence sinks the comment.
Stack ExchangeHigh-intent troubleshooting. People arrive with a specific, describable failure.Network-wide policy discourages self-promotional answers. Disclosure is mandatory.
Indie HackersFounders talking openly about tools and what they spend on them.Small. Great fit or no fit; not a volume play.

Intent is the real axis

Stack Exchange and Hacker News skew toward people who already know what's broken. Reddit and Indie Hackers skew toward people still working out what they need. Quora sits outside the timeline entirely — you're not answering a person so much as everyone who searches that question later.

That changes what a good reply looks like. On Stack Exchange it's a fix. On Reddit it's often a recommendation with reasoning. On Quora it's a piece of writing that still makes sense in two years.

Half-life matters more than people expect

A Hacker News thread is effectively dead within a day. A Reddit thread stays live for a few days. A Quora answer accrues for years. If you only reply to what's hot, you're leaving the compounding channel untouched; if you only write evergreen answers, you're never in the room when someone is actually deciding.

The practical answer: don't choose

The reason we scan all five rather than picking one is that the same problem gets described in all five places by different people at different stages, and which one is worth your afternoon changes week to week. Scanning them together and ranking by how well each thread matches what you do is a more honest way to spend the time than committing to a channel in advance.
